Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Ying-Ju L — 06 May 2009
I agree with a previous comment that the movie could be weirdly melodramatic, but at the same time, the slightly contrived melodrama and the unadorned, sometimes almost jarring cinematography -- lots of natural lights, frequent use of hand-held camera, etc. -- create an interesting tension.
While in the beginning the movie seems to be about the unsettling contrasts btw. the third world and the developed world that verges on criticism, at the end a warm sense of humanity prevails.
