Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Graciela C — 28 Jan 2014
This was a deeply affecting movie, in spite of a somewhat maudlin concept. Done in less masterly hands than Susanne Biers' it could easily have been a melodramatic farce, a soap opera for the big screen.
But between her direction, an excellent cast and dialogue that you couldn't guess at every turn, it packs a gut punch. I cried more than once. Lassgard's is a tour de force performance of scenery-chewing size but he doesn't make a mockery of it.
Mikkelsen is restrained, as always, perfectly suited to the role. A touching surprise is Stine Fischer Christensen as the daughter. Although the ending disappointed by tying it all up a little too perfectly, the rest of the movie overwhelms it.
