Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Daniel C — 03 Jan 2012
This film is that kind of film that has a high regard for its audience. It trusts its audience to understand nuance and ambiguity, even when it might go against deeply held beliefs. The narrative leads us along varied paths, allowing our prejudice and film going expectations to make assumptions, then gently and elegantly shows us that we may be wrong.
This is the kind of film in which the line between sinners and saints are blurred. We witness characters that blend a range of behaviors, some good, some less so, just like in real life. The story telling is so crisp and clear that we never really wonder what is happening, despite what is at times sparse dialogue.
Despite that, mystery is maintained. Predicting what comes next is useless, because the narrative is not paint-by-number style. Discussing plot points serves no useful purpose and may detract from the enjoyment of watching this masterpiece unfold.
It's a splendid piece of filmmaking.
