Review of After Life (1999) by Graham G — 26 Jun 2009
'After Life's' simplicity is its beauty. This is a film that tackles a complex philosophical dilemma without alienating the audience on any level. Not since 'White Dog' has a film been so successful in this regard.
Moments of documentary-style realism (nearly all of the subjects were real people reflecting on their own happiest memories) mesh with paired-down fantasy to create a film that is so full of human warmth and honesty.
Definitely a contender with Hana-bi for the finest Japanese film of the ninties.
