Review of After Hours (1985) by Alexander C — 05 Dec 2012
A stylistic departure for Scorcese, a dark twisted 'yuppie date from hell' comedy a la Something Wild. Dunne's wiry, intense computer programmer arranges to meet up with a flakey bohemian chick for a date and in his attempt to meet up with her descends into an urban underworld where one piece of bad luck follows another, encountering numerous freaks and misfits (Teri Garr's Miss Beehive 1964 is a scream) and before he knows it, an angry mob is chasing him through the streets of New York.
"You would not believe the night I have just had" is a cry of modern-day angst up there with Dante's "I'm not even supposed to be here today!" in 'Clerks'.
