Review of Æon Flux (2005) by Gypsy P — 20 Oct 2010
After hearing that Aeon Flux would not be screened for the critics, I dropped my expectations of the film considerably. Of course, I still planned on seeing it. I am a good Marton Csokas fan, and it's imperative for me to see his movies, hehe.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the film. The directing is artsy and beautiful, the sets are wonderfully sterile and still organic, and the story is interesting. The script was rather cheesy at times, but sometimes you just have to appreciate the cheese, especially when it spouted by such gorgeous, able actors.
Charlize was almost annoyingly monotone for the first half of the film, but this is very fitting with the original cartoon shorts, which I remember watching back in junior high. Marton Csokas is refreshingly human, a break from his habit of playing bad guys very, very well. The acting does tend toward minimalism, almost to the point of being stiff, but it fits with the mood of the film and its setting.
Aeon Flux is by no means a great movie, but it's also by no means a bad one. It's entertaining and visually stimulating, and it's worth a watch if you are a sci-fi fan. I get the feeling that most critics are either a) not fans of science fiction and/or b) miffed that the film wasn't screened for them beforehand. IMO, they need to lighten up a bit.
