Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Amal H — 02 Sep 2010
Well if you can't write a good screenplay why not write a screenplay about how you can't write a good screenplay? This movie turned out to be very entertaining and funny, which I wasn't expecting going in.
Charlie Kaufman does some very clever things in this movie that made it one of the better movies I've seen lately. First, the scene where Charlie goes off on the redundancy of a multiple personality plot line is funny because there is no Donald Kaufman in real life and Charlie is essentially portraying himself as having multiple personalities.
Second, the first two-thirds of the movie appears to be a shockingly honest portrayal of Charlie Kaufman's life while he struggled to write a screenplay for The Orchid Thief. It's not until Charlie begins looking for advice from more conventional screenwriters like Robert McKee and his brother Donald that the movie shifts into a high action thriller with drugs, sex, and violence.
It's almost as if the real Charlie Kaufman got stuck and turned the screenplay over to his fictional brother, Donald. Very clever stuff.
