Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Matt C — 10 Dec 2010
Charlie Kaufman writing a film about Nicholas Cage playing Kaufman writing a film about himself. Typical Jonze/Kaufman territory then. This has been on my want-to-see list for a long time and having finally gotten around to it there is definitely a good film in there somewhere.
Towards the end it goes go off on a bizarrely terrible tangent (although this probably represents even further self analysis...is this actually representing script input from Kaufman's more confident twin?) and it seems to fall to pieces.
There is at the end a nice conclusion however whether the filmmakers are poking fun at you for enjoying that conclusion who knows. It's basically a mess as a film but it revels in being so...and at least it's completely and utterly original.
