Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Paul O — 21 Oct 2011
Adaptation is absolutely incredible. Nicolas Cage gives one of his best performances. Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze have created a beautiful, thought provoking, extremely entertaining movie. The "meta" aspect of it does not feel arbitrary, but extremely necessary.
You watch as Charlie writes what's happening as you watch what's happening while he's writing it. It goes without saying, but it should be said again and again, Nicolas Cage is amazing in both roles.
He completely inhabits both Charlie and Donald to such an extent that they feel real, which is an astounding accomplishment. You care about these characters, you feel their pain, their triumphs, their joy, their sadness.
Charlie and Donald's conversation towards the end when they're hiding from Laroche and Susan is touching. The closing shot of the flowers while "Happy Together" plays is chilling. One of the most brilliant movies I've ever seen.
I hold it in my highest esteem. Everyone involved is fantastic.
