Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Troy R — 12 Apr 2012
Reading the critical consensus above, stating this as 'dizzyingly original', I came to ask myself just how original it was .. it pulls it's inspiration from the cliche aspects of hollywood screenwriting, and although it's a clever satire of those aspects, I didn't find it to be completely original .
. coming after the more original 'being john malkovich', this another 'meta' style of filmmaking turns the focus onto writer charlie kaufman himself, depicted as a neurotic and stressed struggling writer, trying to break hollywood notions of screenwriting while adapting a non-fiction book, 'the orchid thief' .
. it's tightly structured and expertly designed, but it's complexity became wearing for me, and I found myself almost wishing it would end .. an unexpectedly exciting final act redeems the low-key and abnormal proceedings with surprising brutality .
