Review of Adam's Rib (1949) by Daren F — 30 Aug 2008
Courtroom dramas have never been this fun, it is an uproarious comedy that has some great depth, even today. Have you ever seen an old man with a young woman and really thought it to be that wrong and then you see a old woman and a young man and thought it was weird or wrong (if you don't believe me just wait it pop in your head). And this idea is at the heart of the film and of course love (it is Katharine and Spencer, it always ends well) and it is handled with such grace and heart that you cannot help but fall in love.
The story involves that of a assistant DA takes on a case where a wife shot at her husband and mistress, hurting the husband, and the DA's wife taking the case for the wife to fight for woman's right to an equal trial, for if a man had done it there would not be this fuss. Well the story is brilliantly told and fantastically acted (of course of course) and has some tight direction and some fun 'special effects'. It is one of the best Hepburn/Tracy pairings and never gets old.
