Review of Adam's Rib (1949) by John K — 14 Feb 2017
I watch a fair few classic oldies, and I know to expect something more uneven in tone. This was extreme however. I suppose the gender politics were so surprising for the time that a very heavy dose of light relief was required, but isn't that what the patented Tracy/Hepburn badinage is for? What's with the vaudeville and the cross-dressing and the singing neighbour who is clearly coded as gay and unthreatening right up until the point he gets a bit rapey? Probably best left in the past.
