Review of Absentia (2011) by Hardy C — 10 Aug 2013
Moody suburban psychological horror as a woman officially receives her husband's death certificate after a 7-year absence, only to have him suddenly reappear and then disappear with equal mystery. Her visiting nomadic sister becomes convinced that a nearby pedestrian underpass may hold the answers as a history of disappearances have occurred in the area.
The slow pace will put off some viewers and there are very few visual effects, but I found Absentia mostly met its modest aims of creating an aura of confusion and phobia about what lurks in the dark.
Katie Parker as the sister is a name to remember, reminding me of a young Amy Brenneman.
