Review of Absence of Malice (1981) by David F — 06 Sep 2009
A nice little holdover from the great films of the seventies that explore the dynamics of politics and journalism, and the resulting degradation of the individual's right to privacy - in the same pedigree as the Conversation or All the President's Men, but with more of a TV-movie sheen to it.
Newman is the standout, Field manages to rise above the 'Gidget Goes Reporting' snarks, and Wilford Brimley chews the scenery toward the end. A bit predictable at times, but Newman's performance makes it worth it.
Best moment - when Field's character mentions that maybe the Berkshire Eagle will have her back!
