Review of Absence of Malice (1981) by Matthew M — 02 Dec 2011
ABSENCE OF MALICE (1981) is a well acted, well directed and well written movie that holds up all these years later. This engrossing movie is all about demonstrating the need for integrity in journalism and thankfully that message, while not subtly made, is not delivered with such a heavy hand to take away from the enjoyment of the watch.
Though one plot point in the middle is incredibly telegraphed, what happens afterwards pays off well. Paul Newman gives yet another great performance; The man's presence is unmatched and is the lynchpin of this film.
Sally Field is in top form as the journalist. And it was fun to watch the opening credits sequence that shows how newspapers are created, like an episode of How It's Made. No need to rush to see this, but you will be satisfied when you do.
Recommend.
