Review of Absence of Malice (1981) by Private U — 20 Jul 2008
What I love about this film is the way it explores the freedom of speech aspects of the media. As a former journalist, I left the industry because of the heartless virus instilled in my colleagues. Everyone doesn't have a right to know everything about everyone; there are privacy issues that need to be respected.
The legal aspect of printing information free of libelous intent is very revealing in this film, and watching how the media destroys innocent lives in its quest for truth is shocking and horrifying. While I'm not alarmist enough to suggest this can happen to all of us, it is a glaring example of how freedom is a good and bad thing, and restriction of freedom is also a good and a bad thing.
A healthy balance of the two is what American ideals have always been built upon. Republicans and Democrats, take note.
