Review of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) by Jaelin W — 07 Oct 2014
A chilling start as young Abraham tries to save his African American friend from the strike of a slave owner. Quickly introduced to the plot Lincoln's mother is diagnosed with a serious disease, young Abraham sees this and believes he must do something to stop this from happening to anyone else. This movie is very entertaining and action filled.
Awesome camera angles and characters as we are set in the northern part of the early United States. It has the audience confused and anxious from the title "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter". Was Abraham really a vampire slayer, did Abraham experience witchcraft and spooky vampires?
It's not what we would even expect, for Abraham and vampire to even be in the same sentence. Its genius, it gives us another look at Lincoln in his personal life, and even though we know it's not true, it still has the audience second guessing by the end of the tale. And though it is short, in the one hour and fourty-five minute film Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln) is able to portray the Lincoln that we have all learned about. Walker puts his own edgy twist the film needs to be successful. Seth and Timur (director and producer) were able to make a climaxing movie filled with vampire slaying, love, and history all wrapped in one. This movie being made during a time where the vampire theme was almost necessary for human society to function smoothly; with Twilight and Teen Wolf out, makes this movie fit right in with the favorites. This movie is exciting to watch unlike movies about old presidents or big guys of the past. Between Abe fighting and falling in love, it's a storyline that's not what the audience is expecting. Abe suffers from a tragedy stricken life by losing his mother as a child and then losing his son as a man. Is this what fuels Lincoln to slay the vicious vampires who want to take Abe out? Directed by Timur Beckmambetor; he was able to show all these things successfully in this film.
This is a movie that is not too scary to watch but does have a fearful emotional attachment as we watch Abraham in a different light. With some humor in this film it sort of lightens the mood and makes us realize what a family man Lincoln is as he values his relationship with Mary Todd. Lincoln and Todd meet each other in a store and instantly fall in love from sight, Lincoln knows he has a dark side and does not want Mary to know or have anything to do with this secret life. He does a great job of hiding it until he is forced to deal with his problems in the mist of being the President of the United States.
Besides the love and killing vampires, Lincoln is also seen as a great leader and civil rights humanitarian as he wants to please the people he is caught up in the busy life with so much of Lincoln spaced it's a wonder how he functions. Beckmambetur (director) did a great job in making sure that the vampire scenes were intense and somewhat scary. There were several battles where Abe looked like he would die but he came out victorious every single time. There was a lot of blue scenes where everything seemed like a spooky Halloween scene, it was perfect for the battle scenes and the confrontation scenes with other vampires who were on Abe's side.
Abe was out to do a job, not just govern the United States but also fight off the evil vampires and it was all started by Henry Sturges, a vampire who was originally a human. He wanted Abe to kill off the bad vampires because he could not. It was a great mystery that I am still not sure of, but overall the movie makes sense and is fun to watch. Who doesn't want to see their president kicking some vampires ass? This film is filled with good intense action.
