Review of A Woman Under the Influence (1974) by James R — 08 Aug 2007
Devastating. I don't really know how to feel about this movie - I couldn't tell you if it's "good" or "a masterpiece" or "overrated." What I can tell you is that it is an *important film (especially for the developement of independent cinema), one that is hard to watch, not fun, but addicting: it's been in my head for a week.
Mabel is perhaps one of the most interesting screen characters ever, played brilliantly by Gena Rowlands in one of the best screen performances ever... but it's downright exhausting, and very long and slow.
A perfect example for those who believe that only action scenes are intense. THIS is acting.
