Review of A Woman Under the Influence (1974) by Jeffrey L — 22 Nov 2008
This was my first Cassavetes and I recently decided to revisit it along with some of his other films. Rowlands's performance is superb, as is Falk's. Cassavetes's camera takes us so deep inside the tension that we are glued to it, unable to look away, unable -- just as the characters are unable -- to escape what's happening.
The 40-minute-long "intervention" scene halfway through the film is one of the most raw scenes in American cinema with gut-wrenchingly taut acting throughout. Cassavetes is definitely at his most masterful here.
