Review of A Walk in the Woods (2015) by Paul G — 03 Oct 2015
A Walk in the Woods is a film about 2 old guys who decide to hike the Appalachian Trail. The problem is that they cast Nick Nolte as one of those old guys and he almost needs a translator, because he is so mush-mouthed at this point.
It has moments of humor, but never manages to make you laugh. It has moments of drama, but never manages to make you cry. In many ways it was like a ship without a rudder, in that it lacked true direction or focus.
I would have much preferred this movie if it was rewritten as a pure comedy and they added in more slapstick gags and some real good dialogue. The movie was trying to be this story about a guy who was fighting to prove that, even though he was old, life hadn't completely passed him by.
But the events of the movie kept doing their best to prove that he was completely wrong about that. The end is downright depressing instead of uplifting (which I'm pretty sure was not their intent.
) The writers of this film completely dropped the ball because they constantly set up things and never followed through on them, plus the scenes felt pasted together without a good through-line or over-arching theme.
I would not recommend A Walk in the Woods because, while I wasn't actively annoyed by it, I was bored which might be even worse.
