Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Martin T — 13 Jul 2008
The film has little of the playful whimsy of Amelie, but maintains the same level of quality. Jeunet and Delbonnel puts a lot into every shot. Crane shots, dolly shots, low angles, zooms, the camera always breathing a little extra life into each scene.
The plot is captivating: part romance, part war story, part mystery... with an ambiguous but nonetheless sweet ending. Audrey Tautou is wonderful as always, and a cameo by Jodie Foster is refreshingly unintrusive.
