Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Kaitlin S — 29 Dec 2008
Gorgeous movie. Set immediately after WWI, the recollections of the war are brutally intense & heart-wrenching -- a very vivid account of what it was like to be in the frontline of the trenches: the misery, the desperation, the wretchedness of human nature & the ingenuity to find survival.
Indeed humanity at its barest. And yet, the weaving of this account with a love story adds a tenderness to it that breathes into it hope. The cinematography was outstanding with its depiction of France of the 1920's in a vintage sepia.
