Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Jeffrey P — 16 May 2009
Jeunet's tale of a young woman searching for her missing fiancee is technically stunning, but so densely embroidered that the rich details often obscure the romance. Like "Amelie", there's lots of clues, keepsakes, messages, visual metaphors, faulty memories, broadly sketched characters, and a spider web of connections draped over it all.
The ending is enough of a foregone conclusion, though, that it seems like more effort than was really needed.
