Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Anna G — 15 Jan 2011
I love Jean-Pierre Jeunet's movies because:
1. Whenever I watch his movies I have the strong impression that I am back in Paris, even if the movie or part of the movie is not set in Paris,.
2. there's always that unique, kinda weird atmosphere,.
3. his movies contain some details from everyday life, details which we actually don't notice in everyday life. In "Amelie", it was about little things we like and little things we dislike. In "A very long engagement" it's about little things which define some very important decisions. Have u ever done that? For example, Mathilde said, if the dog comes in her room before they call her for lunch, Manech is alive. Like I used to think/hope, if I throw the tissue and it touches the ground without unfolding, I will not fail the exam (I know it's weird and useless, but if the "signs" turn out to be positive it helps u go on, if not it makes u more stubborn and u focus on ur goal :)).
And many more reasons... The actors he choses, how realistic and surreal his movies are at the same time etc etc.
