Review of A Summer Place (1959) by Dave S — 20 Jul 2010
Jaw-dropping. You don't have to look for the subtext here, because it's all incredibly overtly about sex and repression. Seriously, it's like someone hired Mae West to do some script doctoring to a Tennessee Williams piece.
Every line had about three meanings, and it's full of people throwing girdles out of windows, semi-inappropriate father/daughter bonding, hiring peeping toms, alcoholic repressed homosexuals, and lust, lust, lust.
It's not subtle, but it's shocking. And yeah, sort of compelling, too, even if it does play like two movies awkwardly combined.
