The only reason I don't give this a higher rating is because it is basically a thematic copycat of the previous year's film, sunset boulevard. it does have some advantages over its predecessor, though.
while sunset boulevard had some great a.d. and such, this film has the better, more nuanced characters and the better acting. this film, like sunset boulevard, explores the theme of passing one's prime and a person's inability to cope with it.
however, streetcar does more to examine the effect on others of this mental breakdown, and throws in some damn good character motivation and impeccable sidebar social commentary to boot. brando's performance is magnificent, by the way.
