Review of A Star Is Born (1954) by Steve W — 27 Jan 2011
One of the best remakes of all time. I chose this one over the original because of the star power, the amazing duo of Judy Garland and James Mason. When most people think of Judy Garland, they think of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. But this is the movie where her acting is at its finest and she definitely deserved the Oscar she never got.
James Mason also is excellent on the other side, a mentor figure who eventually becomes her husband. His self destruction is tragic and heart breaking, complimenting her naivety and innocence.
Perhaps a bit long at 3 hours, the movie tries to fill in some missing gaps with sepia pictures with audio over them. This ruins the pace a little and they should have left it alone.
The musical numbers are excellent, especially one where Judy leaps out of the movie she is in and sings about her rise to stardom. A fantastic musical with great acting and great star power.
