Review of A Star Is Born (1954) by Jason R — 20 Oct 2013
Last year, I stumbled upon a really cheap copy of the 2 disc set of the restored edition loaded with extras. This weekend I was taking it easy with a bad cold and thought I'd plow through the DVDs.
The movie itself it a bit of a slog. Kind of neat how they restored this cut though. At several points in the movie the camera moves across still photos as they play the audio track as the original footage was destroyed.
The disc of bonus material is way better than the movie. The highlight is a wonderful copy of a kinescope of a 1953 television broadcast called Pantages Premiere TV Special which includes appearances from everyone from Clark Cable to Liberace.
An amazing window into t950's Hollywood.
