Review of A Star Is Born (1954) by Scott W — 05 Aug 2017
Probably the performance of Judy Garland's career. And it's hard to watch it and not think of how destructive she was in her own life, much like James Mason's character. She had a very powerful voice, which comes through in the many songs sprinkled throughout.
This isn't an easy movie to watch. It's almost three hours long and quite bleak. For some reason for the restored version they have parts where all you see are pictures of the actors with the dialogue underneath (the video doesn't exist anymore).
That was distracting. I wouldn't put this in the category of a great movie musical but it has its moments. The movie is being remade (again) with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper next year.
