Review of A Star Is Born (1954) by Pete S — 17 Apr 2012
A well-staged, slick piece of Golden-era Hollywood entertainment. Though Judy Garland tends to receive the lion's share of praise for this film (mostly deserved), James Mason's work is what jumped out most to me; I think his work here is truly exceptional, and perhaps the very best of his storied career.
The script, while it is on the longish side and does flirt with melodrama, is - for the most part - very effective, and there are several quite affecting moments to be found. The songs are good, too, though they do occasionally feel more like padding than integral parts of the (already lengthy) story.
