Review of A Star Is Born (1954) by Wezul S — 14 Nov 2014
An esteemed & drunken actor discovers a talented young singer and leads her to stardom & the altar. Her meteoric rise coincides with his professional decline & increasing alcoholism. This film is both a Hollywood rags-to-riches fantasy & a cautionary tale of the inherent poisons of fame.
Judy Garland is a tour-de-force, but sadly, the only redeeming factor in this otherwise bloated film. Cukor's films seem to be mostly misfires for me, this one included.
