Review of A Star Is Born (1954) by Augustine H — 04 Aug 2013
Honestly, I have never really enjoyed this film until James Mason's breakdown. The scenes are undoubtedly with splendid art direction and Judy Garland is indeed mesmerizing in both vocal performance and portrayal of a celebrity of rising fame, the talking point of alcoholism is far too dated from contemporary views.
Like Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend, modern viewers are unavoidably less receptive to the destruction of alcoholism for a solution seems too piecemeal for them, which drastically reduces the film's emotional gravity.
With the absence of true soulfulness, the acclaims just don't work on me.
