Review of A Short Film About Killing (1988) by Dfg D — 01 Jan 2010
One of the classics of European cinema, and instrumental in the abolition of capital punishment in Poland. An extended version of one of the segments of Kieslowski's Decalogue, consisting of two distinct parts.
First, the brutal murder of a taxi driver by a young man, and secondly his execution by the state. This film does not shy away from violence where required, and the murder of the taxi driver is particularly violent.
Superbly filmed, with unusual angles and stark lighting. Many of the shots featuring the murdered are murky and blurred at the edges. Lots of symbolism, and certainly a film which would repay repeated watching.
A film which everyone should see at least once.
