I don't think it's possible to produce a bleaker, more depressing film that is at times genuinely difficult to watch. Everything about it is grim as we follow the irremediable lives of the characters, trapped within the communist regime.
The surroundings of Warsaw are made to look even more hopeless by the heavy use of filters that obscure the world in constant darkness. Abandon all hope ye who watch...
