Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Kayla F — 07 Sep 2011
I don't think this film is half as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The infamous scenes are disgusting, but fairly brief, and the gore is no worse than a standard horror movie. I think the problem with this film is the infamy itself; you feel the need to watch it because everyone denounces it as "the most controversial film ever made", but other than pushing boundaries, it's not as harrowing or disturbing as other films.
Gore aside, the commentary of A Serbian Film is almost brilliant: the Serbian government fucking everyone over from the minute they are born, or whatever. But I felt this could have been made a little more explicit.
If it's purpose was to rile and offend people so that they question their lifestyles, it succeeded in at least half of that. It's a pretty good film, and I think it makes some valuable points about our obsession with torture, rape, and brutality in porn, in movies, in reality.
Just don't watch it if you are easily offended by the rape of clearly prosthetic babies I guess.
