Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Neil W — 01 Oct 2011
A strong movie that teaches what art is and what is not. The film concentrates around Milos, a retired porn star that really left a major impact on the pornography business. Even do Milo decided to get married and have a kid. The only person that dislikes him is his envious brother that seems he doesn't have the talent to get a wife. Milos is approached by one of his co-stars to work for Vukmir, whom is a pornographic director. In order to make a lot of money, Milos agrees. But as the film continues, Milos realizes he has more to bargain for.
The film is an excellent analysis of pornography. The film shows what limits we should have on making a movie. Even do the movie is strong; if you look it at a different angle you can see that the director is trying to tell you something. The director is telling us that this is not art, that you don't need violence and pornography to make art. This film also represents a battle between order and chaos, is a battle between the anti-hero and the villain. Milos is a person that has been in the dirty business for some time, he got out in order to make a good life but it seems that his demons are still calling for his sexual needs. The consequences he meets someone that is sicker than him, someone that likes to disrespect the limit and break all the rules of this business. Vukmir is not just a fool that follows him; he tries to show him how he made his by making a porno that will make Milos's thinks he is a nutcase. Vukmir is willing to do whatever it takes to make his snuff film.
The climax of the movie is strong, but symbolic. It tells you that before you have sex with anyone think about of your loved ones. Never have sex for money; never disregard the other person's dignity. This is not cinema, because the film shows that it is not cinema, period. The film from the beginning to the end talks about the anarchism of sex. Of how lust has dominated most people's lives in order to get money and a living. But be careful on watching this movie, I believe this is the most disturbing movie ever made, even more disturbing than Salo.
What I didn't like about this movie was the wife of Milos in this movie. Every move she makes in this movie is really stupid. I can't stop asking myself why a woman would marry a retired porn star, besides the sexual pleasure she has with him. What I hated her most was at the near end, I mean he knocks you down and you still have the courage to forgive him? I think she is a terrible mother, wait till you see the end and you will know what I am talking about. If I was the mother I would have kill him right there but no she doesn't, and then they do like the stupidest thing they could have done.
The film was directed by Srdan Spasojevi and this is his first feature movie. As for his first movie I will give him some points even does he go a little too far. Why is this film controversial? Well is one of the nudist movies I have ever scene and the topic about this movie is pornography. There is also violence mixed with sex scenes that are not for the squeamish. This film has been banned in a lot of countries like in Spain. The film also shows scenes of phedophilia and necrophilia that has been put into question of how real this film really is.
The film is rated NC-17, so I strongly recommend that NO kids should watch this movie until they are 19. If you are a person that wants to know what should be in a movie, the consequences of pornography then watch this movie because even do is strong, is a thought-provocative movie.
