Review of A Separation (2011) by Rahul J — 13 Sep 2012
This is the most frustrating movie that I've seen in a long time - and not just because it didn't have an English-dubbed version. First of all, I pretty much saw where the movie was going from the get-go.
What's the most infuriating aspect, however, is how the flick just ends before there's any real resolution or closure. Typical Oscar movie - I shouldn't have had my hopes so high. Secondly, while it's well-acted and set apart from other melodramas due to being set in Iran, it's fairly shallow, and I really don't see how it got a nomination for Best Original Screenplay (though, it was better than 'Midnight in Paris').
The story is apt, but not really gripping or terribly meaningful. It's not unwatchable, it's just unsatisfying.
