Review of A Quiet Place (2016) by Kevin O — 04 Aug 2018
A unique horror film with excellent balance, poignancy, and feelings. Every seemingly inconsequential detail builds toward creating a foundation for something that proves to be important later. It has a satisfying simplicity in its storytelling, a well-edited and compact narrative, and emotional depth firmly rooted in the characters, all of whom were round and dynamic in how they related to the other characters and realistically grew by the end of a relatively lean run time.
It left me craving more of the bleak world it presented. I applaud two things specifically: the creative decision to throw viewers into the deep end of an unexplained situation and the organic development of gender dynamics that inverted traditional, stale gender roles, culminating in an ending that I can only describe as 'badass.
' This shows mature storytelling that trusts the intelligence of its audience to figure out clues on its own. I appreciated this and was rewarded on subsequent viewings. I will definitely wstch the sequel.
