Review of A Quiet Place (2016) by Pam W — 05 May 2018
This movie is really amazing. Primally scary, it touches on fear at an almost instinctive level, the need to be quiet, so they won't hear you. Through use of sound and stellar acting, we are drawn into the story and into the family almost immediately.
Their sorrows are ours, their hopes, their fears. When the family is in danger, you are drawn into it also, until each crunch of popcorn seems like a betrayal. I have never heard an entire theater shush one pair of talkers with such urgency.
Thus the scares in the movie are doubly potent. They matter because we're afraid for the family. And subconsciously we're afraid any sound we make would also be Very Bad. The ending is surprisingly poignant, yet concludes on a satisfyingly ambiguous note.
There is no closure. The story goes on.
