Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Pam W — 31 Aug 2009
The great John Malkovich plays The Great Buck Howard - a mentalist magician with a manic handshake and a poor sense of direction. Colin Hanks (son of Tom Hanks) plays a law school drop-out who wants to become a writer - or something like that - much to the chagrin of his father (played, you guessed it, by Tom Hanks).
The father-son scenes between the Hanks's have a very intimate quality to them. The remainder of Colin Hank's performance is unfortunately very pedestrian as the script uses a lot of voice over while Hanks observes the Malkovich driven action from afar.
The Hollywood 500 club is in effect with a plethora of cameo appearances, but it is Malkovich, wound up in a cauldron of intensity, who saves the day and makes this a film worth watching.
