Review of A Pure Formality (1994) by Stephane M — 02 Feb 2009
My all time favorite! Polanski and Depardieu both deliver an extraordinary powerful performance. This is a movie 'Ã la Kafka', that goes far beyond your typical 'psychological thriller'.
The setting is deceivingly simple - two man dialoguing in a room for the most part - but perfect setup for the otherwise intrinsically complex, engaging and dramatic dynamic at play between the two personas, and the viewer.
It's a mind-provoking movie that explores the soul's innermost secrets, brilliantly weaving conflict, contradiction, pain and desire, with an ultimate sense of beauty and an unpredictable ending.
