Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989) by Carrie — 23 Jul 2009
...And it gets lower. This one tried to bring back the darker roots of the first couple of movies while still going with the "cutesy" thing. Big mistake. It results in the movie contrasting itself and took me out the movie several times.
They would take serious themes and toss them out quickly. There would be scary set ups but then Freddy would spit out another one liner (bad ones at that) and the death would be ridiculous. Apart from Alice and sexy Greta, I didn't like any of the kids here this time.
They bickered a lot and annoyed me to no end. Lisa Wilcox shined again in this one. Erika Anderson was very hot and should've been in it longer. Kelly Jo Minter was okay and Robert Englund is starting to look tired as Freddy.
Stephen Hopkins did a really good job with his directing. He kept it Gothic and did a lot of great stuff with the camera. It's still not that bad for me, though. I dug the movie when it was serious and focused on the plot (half the time), the opening was really creepy, there's one grosso bit involving a motorcycle and the sets in this one are incredible.
I just wish they (New Line Cinema) weren't in such a rush to get another movie out because it had potential. They needed more scares, more story, likeable characters and an EVIL antagonist. This one isn't bad, but don't go out of your way for it.
