Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) by Kyler D — 07 Sep 2012
Good: Does what the 2nd film tried to do by trying something somewhat new- and this time it works while sticking to the classic slasher feel, some really creative deaths, the characters are more complex, there is more backstory added that really works with the series, some twists in the plotline, humor.
Bad: I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "I have superpowers in my dream" thing, seems a bit silly.
After the extreme disappointment of watching Freddy's Revenge I figured the series would go downhill from there. But luckily I was wrong. This film did what the 2nd film tried to do and failed. They explored some new ideas within the series, but made it work with the classic slasher Nightmare on Elm Street feel. This installment adds even more supernatural things to the series, and also adds the ability to have a sort of superpower when you travel into Freddy's realm of dreams. I am not exactly sure how I feel about the superpower thing. While it is somewhat logical, and does give the humans a fighting chance, it seems a bit silly. Part 3 has many of my favorite deaths in the series, and also includes a good amount of Freddy humor, which makes the series so much more fun for me. The characters have more backstory added then usual, although they are still somewhat flat. The film adds more backstory to the creation of our villain, which makes it so much better. The plot features a few twists, one of which threw me completely off guard, something which does usually not happen. Compared to other sequels this one is near the top if not at it, a suggested watch for any horror fan that wishes to see the highlights of the Nightmare on Elm Street series.
