Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) by Jari K — 30 Jun 2014
A truly refreshing film when you compare it to the bland and soulless second installment. The Gothic visuals are amazing and it adds to the nightmarish setting. The return of Nancy continued the actual story of the first film, and we uncover more of Freddy's disturbed past.
Unfortunately, the film is much too campy to make Freddy's story as disturbing as the first one.
The deaths of the characters are generally glanced over, even the most powerful loss near the end of the movie only warrants a tear and a half.
The symbolism is gone, too, and it's traded for Robert Englund spouting one-liners, but you can clearly see he's having fun with this performance. And when the actors are having fun, the audience is having fun.
If you can get over those little pet peeves, the movie as a whole makes for some creepy and suspenseful entertainment, and I can't stress enough that the visuals in this movie are absolutely stunning for being practical effects.
It's clearly more of a popcorn flick than a movie with a message, which makes it more accessible to a wider audience while still being creepy with its atmosphere, stunning visuals, and special effects.
