Review of A Night at the Roxbury (1998) by Scott A — 24 Jan 2013
It's a light comedy with Will Ferrell. There is nothing particularly good about this movie. The storyline is really thin even for a flick running for less than 90 minutes; it could have been boiled down to 45 minutes without losing anything of real value.
If I had seen it in 1998, my opinion would probably be much, much worse. However, with the rise of the douchebags, this movie gets a second life and earns credit for "predicting" the trend ten years early and getting it right (though the music has evolved since then).
Ferrell and Kaffan are really great at acting dumb, which leads to absurd dialogues and give the movie a parodic color. Some attention to details is also noteworthy. For instance, the club girls have this cheap, realistic feel -- somehow an inverted-Austin Powers effect (where even the most remote extra female character is shown to comply with beauty standards, a few intentional exceptions notwithstanding).
