Review of A Man for All Seasons (1966) by Shawn M — 18 Mar 2009
On the face of it, a very simple film without ornament or pretence. I didn't know it was adapted from a play, but that is evident as the writing and dialogue are fantastic.
Paul Schofield is wonderful. Towards the end the jailer remarks "I am a plain and simple man" which is as perfect a description of Thomas More as you could wish for. The largely absent Henry VIII is invoked in almost every scene, but the central drama is More's, and Schofield's performance is exemplary. The farewell scene with his family is heartbreaking.
