Review of A Man for All Seasons (1966) by David Z — 11 Oct 2009
This movie's a challenge. Not for the faint of heart or the short of attention-spanned. The first 30 minutes are especially difficult as the ear adjusts to the heightened language and faulty sound design (not to mention the lack of exposition.
) But once you get past those introductory scenes, once Robert Shaw makes his cameo, the movie takes off in a fantastic way. In this era of irreligion-as-the-state-religion, this defense for personal conviction is especially admirable and important.
The direction is servicable (Zinnemann's not very comfortable with crowd scenes, which often come off as silly) but Scofield and Shaw. Wow. Brilliant.
