Review of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) by Allen G — 05 May 2016
Sweet, stylish, and legitimately creepy- 'A Girl Walks Home Alone' is original and memorable and is the best horror romance since Twilight (I'm kidding, I mean 'Let The Right One In' of course).
If you don't like artsy films you probably don't want to go near this one- its main focus is certainly its style and if you don't care about that, or the look doesn't appeal to you, then you won't find enough meat with the bones here. I loved the look of this one though- I honestly felt a bit uneasy at certain moments and horror films rarely manage to actually achieve that with me.
Shot in black and white, the dark, silent streets, the mysterious woman, following the little boy. Genuinely chilling. It's not just a horror story though, indeed, it's probably not even mostly a horror story. It's really a romance and a fairly solid one at that. It's well-written and the relationship feels genuine and complex. I still couldn't help but wonder what this could have been had it ditched this element and just wen full-horror though. As much as I appreciate genre-mixing and the modern feel of this film, I so dearly want a good straight-up vampire flick and this could easily have been that given how its first half progressed.
'A Girl Walks Home Alone' is a horror film, shot in black and white. After 'Psycho', one shouldn't even consider going down that route unless they know they can offer something new and unique, rather than rip-off one of the genre's most renowned works. 'A Girl Walks Home Alone' earns the right to look as great as it does- maybe one day it too will be considered a classic.
