Review of A Futile and Stupid Gesture (2018) by Steve S — 02 Feb 2018
This film has moments of spit out your whiskey funny in a stupid laugh take that Doug Kenney would've probably cringed at and vetoed for Lampoon content. But after two viewings I still laughed like a crazy person at the chemistry the sometimes mismatched, albeit intimidatingly, good cast possessed.
They were all portraying the giants who shaped comedy as we know it today. Was it perfectly done? No. Was it funny? Hell yeah. This is an homage to a legend that has been little recognized by the public at large but long revered within the comedy community.
It falls short in many ways but never loses the heart and idealistic earnestness that drafted an entire generation of comedic brilliance. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Doug Kenney. No one will argue that.
But what this film lacks in consistency and at times, depth, it definitely makes up for in self-deprecation. Which is a brand of humor I particularly revere. And I think Kenney himself would have approved.
Eye in the butthole and all.
