Review of A Field in England (2013) by Paul N — 04 Jul 2013
A film that proves the English aren't done yet, in the film-making department. This is a great little story, a touch perplexing (on purpose) with a lot of magic and manic energy. It's a film of contradictions and with many layers of interpretation that can be applied to it.
Direction wise, I immediately recognised Bergman-esque "Seventh Seal" type cinematography (great decision to go black and white), with a psychedelic "Performance" edge updated via Chris Cunningham.
The performances are really top-notch, and once again cement Reece Shearsmith as being far above the planes of mere comic actor. So yes, it's confusing at times, but the behaviour of the characters and the folk-stylistic touches help you feel transported back in time to the English Civil War.
A very successful film that not only requires, but also demands a second viewing. Heartening stuff in this current cultural climate.
